The design uses the colors of the Philadelphia Pride Flag, unveiled in 2017 after the Philadelphia City Council commissioned a version of the Pride flag that more visibly honored LGBTQ+ communities of color, who have historically been overlooked within mainstream LGBTQ+ spaces. The black and brown stripes were added to recognize the experiences, contributions, and leadership of queer communities of color — and to reinforce that Pride must include everyone.
